Acne and the Magic of Essential Oils

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged. This is especially common in teenagers and as oil and dead skin cells plug the pores, it often results in the pores getting infected which results in outbreaks of lesions (often called pimples or zits).

What causes acne?

• Some medications that contain androgen and lithium
• Greasy cosmetics
• Hormonal changes such as puberty or pregnancy
• Emotional stress
• Menstruation
• A diet high in refined sugars or carbohydrates
• Picking at acne sores
• Clothing and headgear, like hats and helmets
• Air pollution
• Certain weather conditions like high humidity
• Genetics

What are the types of acne?

Acne can take several forms. They include:

  • Blackheads: Open bumps on the skin that fill with excess oil and dead skin.
  • Whiteheads: Bumps that remain closed by oil and dead skin.
  • Papules: Small red or pink bumps that become inflamed.
  • Pustules: Pimples containing pus. They look like whiteheads surrounded by red rings. They can cause scarring if picked or scratched.
  • Fungal acne This type occurs when an excess of yeast develops in the hair follicles. They can become itchy and inflamed.
  • Nodules: Solid pimples that are deep in your skin. They are large and painful.
  • Cysts: Pus-filled pimples. These can cause scars.

Where does acne most commonly appear?

Acne is most commonly seen on the face, specifically the forehead, but can also be seen on the chest, shoulders, and upper back. Oil glands are all over your body, but those are the places where there are the most; thus, it is most likely for acne to appear there.

What are the complications of acne?

People with darker skin types are more likely than are people with lighter skin to experience these acne complications:

  • Scars. Pitted skin (acne scars) and thick scars (keloids) can remain long-term after acne has healed.
  • Skin changes. After acne has cleared, the affected skin may be darker (hyperpigmented) or lighter (hypopigmented) than before the condition occurred.

What are acne scars and how to remove acne scars?

Scars are formed when an acne breakout penetrates the skin deeply and damages the tissues beneath it. Scarring takes place when our body tries to repair the damage caused to it by acne. The process of repair includes the creation of collagen. If there’s too much collagen then the raised scars appear. Another scarring is caused by the loss of tissue, which creates pits or indentations in the skin. The good news is that these acne scars can be avoided.

Some of these include:

  • Wear sunblock: Too much sun can darken scarring. And the darker your skin color, the more obvious your scars will be.
  • Don’t pick, scratch, or squeeze: Causing extra damage to your skin promotes inflammation which will make scars worse.
  • Treat your acne immediately: The longer you wait, the greater the likelihood of scars.
  • Don’t smoke: Smoking tobacco increases your risk of scarring. Not just acne scars, but scars on your body in general.

How does one get rid of acne with home remedies?

  • Cleaning your skin daily with mild soap to remove excess oil and dirt
  • Using makeup that’s water-based or labeled “noncomedogenic” (not pore-clogging)
  • Not squeezing or picking pimples, which spreads bacteria and excess oil
  • Not wearing hats or tight headbands
  • Not excessively touching face

Tea Tree oil for acne?

Tea Tree Essential Oil is harvested from the leaves of the tea tree plant. This essential oil is one of the most versatile essential oils and it is a great alternative to conventional treatments for many health problems, including acne.
Tea tree oil is a popular choice for treating acne because of its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It’s thought to calm redness, swelling, and inflammation. It can even help to prevent and reduce acne scars, leaving you with smooth, clear skin.

Usage:

Dilute the oil in some water and dab it on your face with a cotton swab twice a day to prevent acne or dilute with a carrier oil and massage it into the skin to unclog pores.

Precautions:

Avoid contact with eyes and inner ears. Dilute with a carrier oil before use. Discontinue use if irritation or rash occurs. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a history of allergic reactions, speak to a doctor before using any essential oil. Always store the oils in a safe area away from children.
